Contact Lenses and Swimming

Summer is now upon us!  With so many outdoor activities, swimming might be overlooked by contact lens wearers.  Remember that open bodies of water are teeming with irritants, contaminants and especially germs.  Contact lens wearers should remember that their lenses may act like sponges, soaking up everything they come in contact with.  Infections from swimming in contacts can be some of the most difficult to treat and may make continued lens wear impossible.  Don’t leave your contact in your eyes if they’ve come in contact with water from pools or open bodies of water.  If they do, remove them quickly and disinfect them according to your doctor’s instructions to protect your eyes from damage and infection.  Click here for more info about wearing your contacts safely.
